Cupping Therapy
Cupping has been around for 2000 years, but it had a resurgence of popularity after the 2016 summer Olympics when Michael Phelps competed with round bruises on his back. He reported that it helped with his performance and recovery. So what is cupping? Cupping therapy is a traditional healing practice that involves placing specialized cups on the skin to create a vacuum or suction effect. This suction is typically achieved by either heating the cups or using a mechanical pump. The purpose of cupping is to increase blood flow, promote healing, and reduce pain in the body’s soft tissues. It is commonly used to address musculoskeletal pain, muscle tension, and inflammation. The cups can be placed on specific areas of the body, such as the back, neck, or shoulders, and can remain stationary or be moved along the skin. Studies have shown that cupping can improve circulation, decrease pain, and enhance the bodies natural healing processes. One study published in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies found that cupping significantly reduced pain in patients with chronic neck and shoulder pain. Another review in the Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine concluded that cupping therapy might be effective in managing conditions like lower back pain, fibromyalgia, and migraines.
